The Skills I Didn't Know I Needed Until I Became a VA at Dilaab Digitals

When I first started as a virtual assistant, I had a very clear picture of what my role would look like. Administrative tasks, calendar management, email coordination, documentation. Clean, structured, predictable. I was ready for that version of the job.

What I wasn't ready for was everything else that came with it.

I Thought I Was Going to Be an Admin VA. I Was Wrong

Most people who enter the VA space have a lane they expect to stay in. Mine was administrative work. It made sense given my background, and honestly, I was comfortable with it.

But Dilaab Digitals had other plans.

Not in a forced way, but in the way that good workplaces do — by putting you in situations that stretch you just enough to discover what else you're capable of.

And for me, that stretch came in the form of social media management, marketing, and eventually, video editing.

Skills I never thought would become part of my professional identity.

The Moment Everything Shifted

The clearest turning point was when I was assigned my first client as a social media manager.

Up until that point, I had been operating within the administrative side of things. But this was different. I was now responsible for someone's online presence, their brand voice, their content strategy. It required a completely different way of thinking.

And somewhere in the process of figuring it out, I realized something: I was good at this. More than that, I actually enjoyed it.

That one client changed the trajectory of how I saw myself professionally.

What Dilaab Actually Taught Me

Working at Dilaab Digitals exposed me to a side of the VA industry that I didn't know I needed to explore. Beyond the administrative skills I came in with, I developed:

Social media management — learning how to build and maintain a brand's presence across platforms with intention and strategy.

Marketing — understanding how content connects to business goals and how to communicate value to an audience.

Video editing — a skill I picked up out of necessity that has since become one of the more versatile tools in my professional toolkit.

None of these were in my original plan. All of them have made me a better VA.

The Unexpected Value of Working Somewhere That Lets You Grow

What I've come to appreciate most about my time at Dilaab is that growth here isn't forced or performative. It happens naturally, through the work itself and through the variety of opportunities that come your way when you show up consistently.

If you had told me when I first applied that I would eventually be managing social media for international clients across tech and finance, I probably wouldn't have believed you.

But that's exactly what happened. And it started with one client, one new responsibility, and one decision to lean into something unfamiliar.
